Woodstock's Water Supply — What You Need to Know
⚠️ Woodstock Has Hard Water — 16–22 Grains Per Gallon
Woodstock's groundwater hardness is estimated at 274–377 mg/L (16–22 grains per gallon) — well above the 10.5 gpg "very hard" threshold and significantly harder than most Ontario cities drawing from the Great Lakes. This is the main reason most Woodstock homes have a water softener installed.
Woodstock's drinking water comes from a City-operated groundwater system with multiple wells. Oxford County — including the City of Woodstock — uses 100% groundwater as its drinking water source. Regular watermain flushing helps maintain drinking water quality by removing mineral build-up and deposits in the distribution system.
Woodstock's estimated water hardness is 274–377 mg/L (16–22 grains per gallon) — somewhat softer than Ingersoll's wells but still firmly in "very hard" territory. Demand has increased in Woodstock's water system since 2024, reflecting the growing need for additional resources to maintain service levels as the city grows.
For current hardness data from the City of Woodstock, contact the city's Engineering and Public Works department or the Oxford County Water Services team at 519-539-9800.

About Woodstock, Ontario
Woodstock is a city of approximately 42,000 people and the county seat of Oxford County, located at the junction of Highways 401 and 403 in Southwestern Ontario. As the largest community on the Thamesford Salt Delivery route, Woodstock is a regional hub for retail, healthcare, manufacturing, and government services for the surrounding area.
The city has a rich industrial and agricultural heritage. Oxford County is often called the "Dairy Capital of Canada" and Woodstock hosts the Oxford County Cheese and Dairy Exhibition. The city is home to a significant Toyota manufacturing plant that has been a major employer since 2008, producing vehicles including the RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid. Woodstock also hosts the Oxford County courthouse, regional hospital (Woodstock General), and several post-secondary campuses.
Like all of Oxford County, Woodstock draws its drinking water entirely from groundwater. Oxford County uses 100% groundwater as its drinking water source, and mineral build-up in the water distribution system is common. Water hardness in Woodstock is estimated at 16–22 grains per gallon — somewhat lower than Ingersoll's wells due to different aquifer characteristics, but still well above the softener recommendation threshold and a significant issue for the city's 42,000 residents.
