Thamesford's Water Supply — What You Need to Know
⚠️ Thamesford Has Hard Water — 20–28 Grains Per Gallon
Thamesford's groundwater hardness is estimated at 340–480 mg/L (20–28 grains per gallon) — well above the 10.5 gpg "very hard" threshold and significantly harder than most Ontario cities drawing from the Great Lakes. This is the main reason most Thamesford homes have a water softener installed.
Thamesford's drinking water comes from groundwater wells managed by Oxford County. The system taps into aquifers below the Ingersoll Moraine — the same glacially-deposited landform responsible for hard water across much of Oxford County.
The water hardness in Thamesford averages 340–480 mg/L (20–28 grains per gallon), placing it firmly in "very hard" territory. Like all Oxford County systems, Thamesford's groundwater also contains naturally elevated minerals from contact with limestone and dolomite bedrock. The Thamesford system received a 100% MECP inspection rating in 2025, confirming the water is safe and the system is well-managed.
Oxford County's 2025 Annual Report confirms that all Oxford County systems, including Thamesford, draw 100% from groundwater — not lakes or rivers. This means the mineral pickup from underground rock formations is unavoidable, which is exactly why virtually every home in the area has a water softener.

About Thamesford, Ontario
Thamesford is a village of approximately 3,900 people in the Township of Zorra, Oxford County, situated on the Middle Thames River roughly midway between Ingersoll and London along Highway 2. The community is the business home of Thamesford Salt Delivery — Annika lives and works here, which means Thamesford customers get the fastest delivery times of any town on the route.
The Township of Zorra, which encompasses Thamesford and Embro, covers a largely agricultural landscape with a strong community identity. Thamesford is home to the district recreation centre, a library branch in a historic former municipal building, and the Thamesford Trojans Junior C hockey club. The Middle Thames River runs through the village and contributes to the glacially-influenced terrain that gives the area its characteristically hard groundwater.
Thamesford's water system draws from three secure groundwater wells that tap into aquifers below the Ingersoll Moraine. Because the wells are relatively shallow compared to some Oxford County systems, hardness levels can vary more seasonally but average in the range of 20–28 grains per gallon — solidly in "very hard" territory and well above the softener recommendation threshold of 7 gpg. The Thamesford system earned a 100% MECP inspection rating in 2025.
