Embro's groundwater hardness is estimated at 308–428 mg/L (18–25 grains per gallon) — well above the 10.5 gpg "very hard" threshold and significantly harder than most Ontario cities drawing from the Great Lakes. This is the main reason most Embro homes have a water softener installed.
Embro's drinking water comes from two secure groundwater wells operated by Oxford County. The wells draw from aquifers below the agricultural landscape surrounding the village, where water filters through limestone and calcium-carbonate rock before reaching the pumps.
The result is water averaging 308–428 mg/L (18–25 grains per gallon) — firmly in "very hard" territory. Oxford County treats and supplies drinking water to 21 communities through 17 municipal drinking water systems, and the Embro system was one of eight systems to earn 100% MECP compliance in 2025.
At this hardness level, water softeners are essentially standard equipment in Embro homes. Without a softener running correctly and stocked with quality salt, calcium and magnesium deposits accumulate in pipes, water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines — significantly shortening their lifespan.

About Embro, Ontario
Embro is a village of approximately 900 people in the Township of Zorra, Oxford County. The community is best known as the home of the Embro Highland Games, held annually by the Zorra Caledonian Society — one of the longest-running Scottish highland games events in Ontario, celebrating the area's deep Scottish settler heritage. The village also hosts the Embro-Zorra Community Centre, a hub for local sports and community events.
Embro sits at the heart of some of the most productive farmland in Oxford County, surrounded by fields of corn, soybeans, and mixed crops. The community has a close-knit character, with strong minor hockey and baseball associations, local churches, and the Embro Business Association serving village commerce.
Like all of Oxford County, Embro draws its drinking water entirely from groundwater. The village's two wells tap into aquifers carrying calcium and magnesium-rich water, resulting in hardness levels of 18–25 grains per gallon. The Embro drinking water system earned a perfect 100% MECP inspection rating in 2025, one of only nine Oxford County systems to achieve that score.
