Ingersoll's Water Supply — The Facts
⚠️ Ingersoll Has Significantly Hard Water
Oxford County's 2025 Annual Drinking Water Report confirms Ingersoll's groundwater hardness ranges from 313–439 mg/L (18–26 grains per gallon) based on historical running averages. That's well above the "very hard" threshold of 10.5 gpg — roughly double what Lake Ontario communities experience — and a key reason most Ingersoll homes already have a water softener installed.
Ingersoll's drinking water comes entirely from groundwater — not a lake or river. Oxford County operates seven secure groundwater wells across the town, each with its own Water Treatment Facility (WTF). Water drawn from deep underground aquifers picks up calcium and magnesium minerals from contact with bedrock on its way up — that's exactly why Ingersoll's water is hard.
In 2025, six of the seven wells were active, together producing over 1.49 million cubic metres of treated water for the town's approximately 14,960 residents. The system received a perfect 100% compliance rating from Ontario's MECP in its October 2025 annual inspection.

At 18–26 grains per gallon, Ingersoll's water is significantly harder than most Ontario cities on Great Lakes water (Toronto and Hamilton typically test at 7–10 gpg). Why Is Ingersoll's Water So Hard?
The answer is geology. Ingersoll sits at approximately 280 metres above sea level on terrain shaped by glacial deposits — including the Ingersoll Moraine. The town's groundwater wells draw from aquifers embedded in limestone, dolomite, and calcium-carbonate-rich glacial till. As water filters through these rock layers on its way to the wells, it picks up calcium and magnesium — the minerals that make water "hard."
Several of Ingersoll's wells also carry naturally elevated hydrogen sulphide — Hamilton Road tested at 5.42 mg/L raw and West Street at 5.08 mg/L in 2025. All six active facilities remove it with specialized oxidation equipment before the water reaches your tap (post-treatment: undetectable at all sites).

✅ April 2025 Incident — Resolved Promptly
On April 28, 2025, two lab samples returned inconclusive NDOGN results. Oxford County immediately issued a precautionary Boil Water Advisory, flushed the distribution system, and collected two full rounds of follow-up samples. All results came back satisfactory. The system earned a perfect 100% MECP inspection rating that October. This kind of fast, transparent response is exactly what a well-run water system looks like.

About Ingersoll, Ontario
Ingersoll is a town of approximately 14,960 people situated on the Thames River in Oxford County, roughly 36 km east of London and 20 km west of Woodstock. Founded in 1818 by Charles Ingersoll and incorporated as a town in 1865, Ingersoll has deep roots in both agriculture and dairy.
By the 1860s, Oxford County's dairy industry had made Ingersoll famous across Canada. In 1866, local producers crafted a 7,300-pound "mammoth cheese" exhibited at the New York State Fair in Saratoga before being exported to England — a story still celebrated in the town's history. The Thames River, running through the centre of town, shapes much of the local geography and contributes to the glacially-influenced terrain that gives Ingersoll its characteristically hard groundwater.
